Based off of the selections on this form, we are able to generate an estimate for the project. Please keep in mind this is just an approximation of desired procedures and their respective costs. The final cost for the order will depend on the condition of the book once it is received by Grimm and any changes made to the order after it is evaluated by one of our binding specialists.
Choose the Type of Cover you would like from the 5 buttons - Explanations of each type are described below:
1. "Full Cover" - Leather, imitation leather, book cloth or 10 pt coated paper with the full cover all being one material.
2. "1/2 Bind" - This is where the spine is in leather, imitation leather or other book cloth you choose and the front/back covers are in another material (like book cloth or fancy paper).
3. "3/4 Bind" - This is where the spine and corners are in leather or imitation leather (or what you choose) and the front/back covers are in another color or material. Tyically in cloth or fancy marbled papers.
For the first 3 choices, if you click on them, a new drop down will open immediately to select the cover material you want. The first is for the front/back material. Below that is the selection for the spine and/or corners material. For the spine/corners you'll need to click on the "Select an Option" drop down to choose:
"Non Leather (Standard)" which is book cloth, imitation leathers or 10 pt coated papers (imitation leather made of laminated paper).
"Bonded Leather" - An economy manufactured leather product. Made of leather, but it's ground up and pressed (like particle board is to wood). There are no imperfections and it smells, feels and looks like real leather (but is not as strong). A nice option when you don't need a strong covering but want to make a good impression for less cost.
"Cow, Pig and Kidskin" - Genuine leather skins, natural and in many colors. The most traditional form of leather binding.
"Glaze & Veg Tan" - High end choices for genuine leather skins. The Glaze is thick and rustic, the Veg Tan is the best quality preferred by most leather connoisseurs.
Note: For the 1/2 bind option and the 3/4 bind option, you'll be prompted to make TWO choices for material. Typically you choose the stronger leather or cloth for the spine/corners (because they wear out faster) and the basic materials (book cloth, papers) for the boards (front/back of the book).
The remaining cover choices are:
4. "Laminated Color Copy" - For a new book, where you designed a full color print cover. In this case, we use your provided print file to print your image for the cover. For instance, if a family history, maybe there are a collage of photos of your family members on the front with the title on the spine. Or, for a cookbook, you may have a photo on the front of a delicious apple pie. We print your file, laminate it and use to make your hard cover book. If you choose this option, you're next step will be to upload your cover print file. NOTE: If you want Grimm to scan your existing book to make a new color copy cover of the damaged printed cover (often done with children's books), you should choose the last choice of "Use My Old Cover". For that choice, we will discuss all the options once we recieve the book and before we start the work.
5. "Use My Old Cover" - If you want to repair or restore the existing cover of your book, then this is the choice is for you! If it's broken, we'll put it back together with materials that are as close to the original as possible. If the spine, or the front, or the back cover is missing, we can replace that part as well! Again, for this last choice, the price will be just an estimate. Once you send in the book and evaluate it, we will discuss all options before starting any work so you can make the exact choices you want. You can also add notes at the end to let us know if you have preferences.
------After choosing from the above 5 options, you can also choose alternate options for the boards-----
"Standard Hardcover" with "Square Corners" is the default, if you just want that, you can hit NEXT now to go on to the next options.
But, if you prefer a "Flexible Cover" (usually for Bibles) or a "Padded Cover" to be a bit more fancy, you can choose those from the drop downs. "Flexible with Flaps" is used at times if you have tabs in your Bible that you want to cover, or if you're imitating the original cover that had larger overhangs. After time, the "flaps" then bend slightly over your pages. You can also choose "Rounded Corners" if you prefer, but rounded corners are normally only if your original pages already have rounded corners. We are NOT able to trim your pages with rounded corners, just the cover!
